Community Health Worker

New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) strengthens the physical, social and economic fabric of Kensington, Fishtown and Port Richmond, Philadelphia, by being a catalyst for sustainable development and community building. NKCDC draws on the strengths of the community to empower residents and promote resident-driven development.

The Community Health Worker (CHW) will be part of the NKCDC Community Engagement team, working to address quality of life concerns of residents in the Kensington community. Team member will take part in paid training for community health worker and peer support specialist certifications, as well as trauma-informed community leadership. CHW will perform community outreach and organizing, build relationships with community residents, screen residents for resource needs, and refer residents to services and resources. CHW will also take part in project-based work in the following tracks: Community healing and resiliency, community health, housing, youth leadership, and crime and safety.

This is an hourly position (up to 25 hours/week) for the 2019 calendar year with the possibility of extending employment term.

Reports to
Associate Community Engagement Director

Professional responsibilities

  • Attend month long paid training with certification
  • Attend training on trauma-informed community leadership
  • Provide community outreach and organizing in the Kensington community
  • Screen community residents and NKCDC clients for community health and resource needs
  • Refer community residents and NKCDC clients to appropriate services and resources
  • Track client and referral information
  • Take part in project-based community organizing in the following tracks: Community healing and resiliency; Community health; Housing; Youth leadership; Crime and Safety
  • Work with other CHWs and staff to create a directory of community resources
  • Meet with supervisor and team on a weekly basis
  • Take part in continuing education, professional development, and employment coaching
  • Attend community meetings, events, and trainings as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • An interest and/or experience in working directly with people one-on-one.
  • Spanish language skills highly preferred.
  • Residence in 19134 preferred.
  • Excellent customer service & inter-personal skills.
  • Ability to coordinate outreach and communicate information.
  • Experience working compassionately with diverse and vulnerable populations, preferably in the Kensington neighborhood.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.

This employee will be paid $15/hour for up to 25 hours per week.
