A creative celebration of community

Saturday, May 20 was the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby & Arts Festival—one of Philadelphia's wackiest community events. Watch the video from PhillyCAM below.

Now in its 11th year, the Sculpture Derby is part parade, part design contest. Teams of artists and inventors build quirky human-powered floats and maneuver them through the streets of East Kensington, winning awards for best art, best costume, best engineering—or best breakdown. The last challenge on the parade route is a mud pit.

At the same time, the event features a stationary arts festival, held on Trenton Avenue from Norris to Dauphin Street, which draws more than 200 local arts and food truck vendors along with live arts demonstrations and performances. The combined event is coordinated by East Kensington Neighbors Association (EKNA) and NKCDC.
