Neighborhood Steward

Part-time/seasonal position

New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) strengthens the physical, social and economic fabric of Kensington, Fishtown and Port Richmond, Philadelphia, by being a catalyst for sustainable development and community building. NKCDC draws on the strengths of the community to empower residents and promote resident-driven development.


The Neighborhood Steward will be part of the NKCDC Community Engagement team, working to address quality of life concerns of residents within the boundaries of the Somerset Neighbors for Better Living civic association (SNBL). Team member will build relationships with Kensington residents and serve as a liaison between NKCDC, SNBL, City agencies, and residents to identify and report quality of life issues. In addition to reporting neighborhood issues, team member will perform outreach, attend neighborhood meetings as needed, and work with block leaders to organize neighbors.

Steward positions are funded through the City of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. For this reason, all candidates will need to complete the documentation required for temporary employment with the City, including background check and FBI clearance.

This is an hourly position (up to 40 hours/week) for 6 months. Depending on response and need, NKCDC will hire one Steward for 40 hours per week or two Stewards for 20 hours per week.

• Maintain list of block leaders and communicate with residents and community organizations about status of neighborhood issues.
• Maintain records of quality of life issues, reporting to 311, NKCDC, SNBL, and other City Agencies as needed with appropriate follow-up.
• Work with NKCDC and SNBL to provide outreach for neighborhood events, programs, activities and resources through door-to-door outreach, phone calls, organizing community leaders, and attending community meetings and events.
• Assist block leaders in organizing neighbors.
• Provide selected outreach and administrative support to SNBL.
• Collect and enter data as needed.
• Attend community meetings, events, and trainings as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.


• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• An interest and/or experience in working directly with people one-on-one.
• Spanish language skills highly preferred.
• Residence in 19134 preferred.
• Excellent customer service & inter-personal skills.
• Ability to coordinate outreach and communicate information.
• Experience working compassionately with diverse and vulnerable populations, preferably in the Kensington neighborhood.
• Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed.


This employee will be paid $12.20/hour for up to 40 hours per week.
